Solar Lantern vs Solar String Lights: Which Suits Your Space?

Solar lanterns and solar string lights are the two most popular ways to add ambient outdoor light — but they do quite different jobs. Here's how to pick the right one for your space.

What each one is best at

Solar lanterns give a defined pool of light and act as a focal point. Hung over a seating area or placed on a table, a lantern draws the eye and anchors a space. They suit patios, balcony corners, dining nooks, and doorways — anywhere you want a clear source of warm light with some presence.

Solar string lights give a spread of small points of light rather than one source. They're for covering area and creating atmosphere: wrapped around a railing, draped along a fence, threaded through a tree, or strung across a pergola. They don't light a space so much as decorate it.

A quick way to choose

• Want a cozy focal point over a table or seating? Lantern.
• Want to outline a railing, fence, or tree? String lights.
• Small balcony where floor space is tight? String lights along the railing keep the floor clear.
• Doorway or entrance you want to feel welcoming? Lantern.
• Festival or party atmosphere across a whole area? String lights, or both together.

You don't have to choose just one

The best-looking setups usually combine them: string lights to define the edges of a space and set the overall mood, with one or two lanterns as focal points where people gather. The string lights give the atmosphere; the lanterns give the space structure.

One practical note

Both need their panels in the sun to charge, but lanterns are easier to reposition for charging since they're single units. Long string-light runs are best placed where at least the panel end gets good direct sun.
