The pitch for solar lights is “zero electricity cost.” That's true, but it's worth actually running the numbers against mains-powered outdoor lighting so you know what you're comparing.
The upfront difference
Mains outdoor lights are usually cheaper per unit than solar equivalents. But the real upfront cost of mains lighting isn't the light — it's the wiring. Running weatherproof cable out to a gate, along a boundary wall, or across a garden means an electrician, conduit, and often digging. Solar has none of that: the light and its panel are one unit you place where you want it.
The running cost
Here's where solar pulls ahead. A mains outdoor light left on from dusk to dawn draws power every night of the year. Solar draws nothing from the grid — it recharges free every day. Over a few years, on lights that run all night, that difference adds up, and it's entirely predictable because there's no bill attached.
Where mains still wins
To be fair about it: mains lighting is brighter and more consistent, and it doesn't care about the weather or the season. If you need reliable, high-output security lighting that works identically in December fog and July sun, mains (or a mains-solar hybrid) is the more dependable choice. Solar is at its best for decorative, ambient, and dusk-to-dawn lighting where a few hours of runtime and seasonal variation are acceptable.
The honest summary
Solar costs a little more upfront per light, saves the entire wiring cost, and then runs for free. For gardens, gates, pathways, and balconies — decorative outdoor lighting that doesn't need to be floodlight-bright — it usually comes out ahead over any reasonable time horizon.
